Rhinoplasty Surgery Basics

Rhinoplasty, otherwise known as a nose job, is actually a cosmetic plastic surgery method for transforming and reshaping the nose into a more conical shape. There are basically two forms of rhinoplasty surgical procedures used today reconstructive rhinoplasty that restores the original shape and functions of the nasal bone and cosmetic rhinoplasty which alter the overall appearance of the nasal bone. Many patients who have undergone a rhinoplasty procedure feel that the result of their operation was better than they would have achieved naturally. Although there is no magic pill when it comes to achieving the best you can achieve, there are certain tips you can follow that will help enhance your final outcome.

One of the most common complications following rhinoplasty surgery is bruising. The qualified cosmetic surgeon will carefully monitor and minimize the amount of bruising that occurs during the procedure. Although the majority of patients are able to experience minimal or no bruising at all, in some cases additional treatment may be necessary to reduce the amount of swelling experienced. If additional treatment is required, the plastic surgeon will discuss these with the patient and work together to come up with a plan that is effective but safe.

It is important for the patient to follow all of the post-surgical instructions given by their surgeon. Click here, if the patient is having their nose re-inserted, they must follow the post-op instructions regarding the amount of time they are allowed to wear contact lenses. The same applies if the surgeon needs to perform any additional procedures on the rhinoplasty surgery. These could include putting anti-inflammatory medicine on the eye surface, cleaning the eye, or taking x-rays. Doing any of these things without the approval and monitoring from the surgeon is not recommended, as this may increase the chance of further complications.

The surgeon’s biggest concern is the potential for any adverse reactions from strenuous activities following rhinoplasty surgery. There are certain activities that should be avoided after the procedure, including strenuous activities like skiing or riding competitively. In addition, the patient should refrain from using sedatives to reduce pain or any anti-inflammatory medications for at least two weeks. This will help the patient avoid unnecessary exposure to strenuous activities that may cause swelling. If the patient is able to continue normal activities, he or she should consult his or her facial plastic surgeon to determine if there are any other changes that can be made to the nasal profile to avoid overexposure to these activities.

A significant side effect that has been reported following rhinoplasty surgery is difficulty breathing. This side effect typically occurs after the plastic surgeon uses an epidural steroid injection to numb the airway. However, there are other ways of performing this procedure that does not require anesthetic injections. These methods include clipping the nose bridge and clipping the adenoids. If either of these methods are unsuccessful, the patient may try inhaling corticosteroid medication.

A new shape of the nasal septum may result in excessive snoring or abnormal breathing. For this reason, patients that have had rhinoplasty surgery are advised to avoid smoking and alcohol. Smoking results in increased blood pressure and may also cause irritation to the skin that causes a ‘cough’ appearance. Alcohol is known to relax the muscles surrounding the throat, which in turn can cause a ‘lobster claw’ appearance to the tip of the nose where the scarring occurs.
